AZAR NAFISI’S new book is both prequel and sequel to her earlier memoir, “Reading Lolita in Tehran”. Her latest work, “Things I’ve Been Silent About”, reveals some inconvenient truths about Ms Nafisi’s upbringing that she chose to keep private while her parents were alive. The book is less inventive than her earlier work, which was not so much about the author than about the contradictions of post-revolutionary Iran. But it still has appeal as a portrait of a family and a country that are at once alluring and deeply dysfunctional.

All happy families resemble each other, Tolstoy wrote, while unhappy families are each unhappy in their own way. For Ms Nafisi, the unhappiness flows primarily from her mother, Nezhat, a beautiful but demanding woman who lost her own mother at an early age and finds it hard to love and be loved in return. She exaggerates the merits of a first husband who died shortly after their marriage, browbeats a second to the point that he is unfaithful, and tries to force their daughter to inform on her father. She assembles an odd collection of acquaintances for Friday coffees and has trouble curbing her tongue. Ms Nafisi writes of her mother that “each person would pass her on to the next, like a dangerous explosive, hoping she would blow up somewhere else.” Yet Nezhat spurs her daughter to excel, accompanying her to England for education, bragging about her accomplishments and frequently plopping chocolates and orange segments into her mouth.

Nezhat is a metaphor for Iran: a person of enormous promise who never fulfils her potential. The smartest student in her school, she should have been a doctor, but instead has become “another intelligent woman gone to waste”. She compensates by seeking to control her domain but, like Iran, alienates those who love her and pushes them away.

Ms Nafisi’s father, Ahmad, is easier but no less tragic. Nezhat makes her child stubborn and determined to excel almost out of spite; Ahmad provides emotional support and gives his daughter a love of literature, especially the great works of the Persian past. A talented bureaucrat, Ahmad becomes mayor of Tehran but is jailed for several years in the 1960s on trumped-up corruption charges. The injustice spurs the family to support the opposition that eventually topples the monarchy, only to face an even more capricious and repressive regime.

Ms Nafisi’s earlier memoir did an excellent job of exploring the absurdities of life under the ayatollahs, using the vehicle of a literary discussion group that dissected the works of writers such as Vladimir Nabokov and Henry James. This book adds details about the run-up to the revolution but covers familiar ground for those already versed in Iranian history. Ms Nafisi’s own path is full of experimentation and missteps. Studying abroad, she joins a group of would-be Iranian Maoists in Norman, Oklahoma. She marries young to escape her family, but the marriage fails. “In choosing to marry Mehdi, I had lied to myself and betrayed my own ideals of the kind of woman I aspired to be,” she writes.

Eventually she remarries a more suitable intellectual. They stick it out through the Iran-Iraq war and the birth of two children, leaving for good a decade ago when Ms Nafisi received a fellowship from Johns Hopkins University. A luminary now in the exile community outside Washington, DC, Ms Nafisi appears to have made peace with her family and her heritage. Her parents lived long enough to see her successful. The Iran of her childhood is gone but the one of her memories is a place no relative or ruler can destroy: a land of sweet shops, snowy mountains and heroes and heroines from a glorious if mythical past.

幸亏有狗

《eight below》，貌似被翻译成《南极物语》或者《零下八度》。果然翻片子的人没看过片子，否则，就算叫“八条狗”都比这两个垃圾名字好。当然，如果看过了还是这么翻的，那、那、那译者的智商就真有点儿可怕了。below显然就是我们所谓“南下广州”的“下”，所以它的意思很简单，就是地球最南端的八条狗。
片子拍得有点儿假，属于想煽情又找不对地方的类型。就像在最后发现Maya的时候，我觉着正常人都会赶紧摸摸温不温，瞧瞧有没有救啥的；丫却在那儿呆了吧唧的掉眼泪，这就导致此时的悲痛效果和后来的惊喜效果都大打折扣。这么假还指望赚人眼泪捏？所以，在人的方面，垃圾片的要素已经基本具备了；所以，我只能说，幸亏有狗啊。
刚开始我就被那几只拉着雪橇飞速奔跑的狗迷住了。雪橇启动时头狗四脚离地高高跃起的英姿，在许多年后，我依然会不时想起，多么鲜活的生命力啊……然而，这只是开始。接下来，我又看到了对那群鸟的完美围捕，我当时就震惊了！我不断地反复问自己，这是真的么？这会是真的么？这真的会是真的么？Maya那张冷静的脸，酷得我心都碎了。
脱离大部队的Max居然不知怎么活了下来。在第一次围捕被批评了之后他迅速成长，跟海豹抢食的战斗中，表现了出色的头狗风范。Jerry说，He's still in training。在没有人的情况下，他更快地被train了。
可惜，Buck只是剩下的芸芸众狗之一，我总会想到《野性的呼唤》里的Buck，我开始还在猜想他后面会不会跟哪个猛兽来次单挑来着。不过，这片子一直说自己是根据真事改编的，很写实。既然人家自己这么说，我也就只好偷偷地隐藏起自己dramatic的馊主意。
我前段时间刚看完杰克伦敦的《野性的呼唤》（The Call of the Wild），说实话不怎么喜欢。但是看完这部片子我忽然又想去再看一遍了。

It was supposed to be the year that saw the discovery of the long-sought Higgs boson, which physicists need to explain why matter has mass. The Higgs, as many readers will be aware, is the principal quarry of a billion particle accelerator known as the Large Hadron Collider that is located on the outskirts of Geneva. However the LHC, which was commissioned to great acclaim in September 2008, closed down in a rather embarrassing puff of helium gas from its cooling system nine days later. The repairs will take so long that the likelihood of its finding anything dramatic before the end of 2009 is now remote.

That gives a rather less flashy project the chance of making the physics discovery of the year. The Boulby Underground Laboratory is stuck at the bottom of a potash mine in northern England. The aim of its three experiments, known as Zeplin-II, Zeplin-III and Drift-II, is to detect dark matter—for another of the things that physicists don’t know is why the visible sort of matter that stars, planets and people are made of seems to be only a sixth of the total.

The best guess is that dark matter is made of different types of particle from “ordinary” matter. The LHC has a good chance of making these particles, but if they are six times as common as ordinary matter in outer space then it ought to be possible to detect them in the wild, as it were. That is what Boulby is trying to do. Unfortunately, they are hard to detect.

The Zeplin detectors are filled with liquid xenon. The hope is that occasional dark-matter particles called neutralinos will run into the nuclei of the xenon atoms, releasing detectable amounts of energy as they do so. Drift-II is more ambitious. If it works, it will be able to track such a recoiling nucleus through a device filled with gas. It will therefore be possible to work out which direction the neutralino that caused it to recoil came from and thus engage in a form of dark-matter astronomy.

长镜头，又是长镜头。自从《站台》开始，我越来越喜欢长镜头了。
这部沉闷的片子看走了我两个同事，最后只剩我自己看完了。 当Black自己拨着吉他唱《Death to Birth》的时候，我真替他们惋惜。那是长时间沉闷之后一次歇斯底里的爆发，那种发泄的快感，非一路看下来无法体会，一如我郁闷数日之后听到《O Fortuna》。
人们总喜欢对号入座，看这部片子的人们总喜欢跟Kurt联系起来，一路看来，就等着Kurt那金碧辉煌的死亡。于是在长久的沉闷之后中途离去，或者在惨淡的结尾之下愤而骂娘。这哪里是看电影，这叫等死。就像看《Hilary and Jackie》的人们也总喜欢扯上Jacqueline，然后陷入无尽的争吵，何必呢？还是那句话，Love it, Just as a fiction.
搜了一下《Death to Birth》，YouTube上居然真的有这段。

难怪王二说看见狗撒尿的踢踏舞就犯恶心，大概实在是看了太多歌舞片了。我也越来越发现那玩意儿当真都一个样儿，音乐风格一样，舞蹈风格一样，连演员长得风格都一样，我就直接把Ray Bolger错认成Donald O'Connor了……小姑娘比我心中的Dorothy大了不少，刻薄点儿说样子也算不得可爱。看小说是很久很久之前的事情了，已然忘得差不多啦，但总觉着电影情节很我印象中的小说差很大，我不喜欢电影的情节设置。我依稀记得似乎有句"East, West, Home's Best"是我从这本书看到的，似乎电影里也没了……

盖叫天：这个一定要mark

我一向不喜欢武戏。我觉着那玩意儿很无聊，最多跟杂技似地，又没杂技惊险。
我费了两天时间，终于看完了《盖叫天的舞台艺术》。其中有段，老态龙钟的盖叫天扮起小童模样，演劈山救母的沉香，我不禁想起老年发福的李世济演《锁麟囊》时的样子，别扭猥琐中，又隐含多少凄凉……不过，前半部分硬撑下来，到后面武松的部分就好看多了。盖叫天的武松干脆利索，形象也跟我脑子里的极为神似，在我而言还是比较有可看性。盖叫天一副哑嗓子，音域也不宽，但他的唱腔风格恰到好处，不但有特色，还可以使人忽略掉他的缺陷，当真不简单。
看到最后，居然有了这么个镜头。小姑娘上去献花，盖叫天低下头来亲一下。本来我觉着这个动作很自然而然，但见到小姑娘直躲，才想起来这是在那个神奇的时代。那么这个镜头就真的值得保留啦。

JULY 14th 1789, the day the Bastille prison was stormed, has an iconic hold on the French imagination. Schoolchildren are taught that it is the republic’s founding moment. It is France’s national day and a public holiday. A military parade is held on the Champs Elysées, and fighter jets, blazing a trail of red, white and blue, screech low over Paris. This year will be particularly grandiose. President Nicolas Sarkozy has invited as his guests European Union and Mediterranean leaders, as well as Ingrid Betancourt, the recently liberated Franco-Colombian hostage. But, of all the pivotal dates during the French Revolution, how did July 14th come to acquire such mythical status? This, rather than the events of the day itself, is the subject of this intriguing little book by Christopher Prendergast, an historian at Cambridge University.

真是一天不学习，赶不上陈冠希丫。韩寒丫骂我们敬爱的大师们骂了这么久了，我居然今天才看到。我看了之后暗想，个狗日的这不是找死么，我们中国有这么多大师门下的文化人，几口唾沫还不淹死丫的。
然后我就找呀找呀找朋友，找了大半天。咦？除了帽子厂的师傅们跑出来扣了几顶样式不多的帽子外，我咋就没见个念过书的说句话呢？难道念过书的都觉着丫说得没错么？还是积聚着更大的暴风雨呢？嗯，也可能都跑去帽子厂赶制帽子了，造个铺天盖地的，说不定能上急你死记录呢。
至于韩寒，瞧见他博客上已经把老舍同学换下来了。那么，我已经没有任何不同意的地方了。我欣慰得有理。
